We don’t try and sell them in the e-mail. We remind them of their interest, we remind them where they visited, and we include a link back to the site if there is some other information we didn’t tell them. Each time we write in those follow-ups we put something in like “oh, maybe I didn’t tell you.” “Maybe I need to remind you.” “Maybe you didn’t realize.” “Are you aware that the deal expires tomorrow that I offered you? I don’t want you to miss it. You can click here and go right to the site.”

These kinds of notes are not common. People are not accustomed to getting them. They’re accustomed to getting lengthy sales letters and such. So how do they respond to these short messages? They respond as if they are personal correspondence.

Thirty-seven percent of the messages that we send out get a response. Now, we have to admit, that takes some time. But they write us to tell us thanks for writing and they give us the reason that they’re not going to buy.

That’s why the Internet, for us, is a much, much better sales tool than mail order. We sell the same product through mail order, so it makes a nice comparison. In mail order we don’t hear why they don’t buy - they just don’t buy. If someone is not interested, they’re not interested.

With the e-mail follow-up, they tell us why they’re not interested. Thirty-seven percent of the people will write us and say, “I’m not interested because....Or “I don’t have the time to.... It’s too expensive for me right now.....” or they give any number of reasons. That gives us a chance to instantly respond to them and say, “Thanks for your note. I realize you’re really busy, but just remember in your future planning that it only takes 15 minutes, three days a week, to accomplish...” whatever it is that they want to accomplish.

Clearly, a few minutes of rational thought would lead one to believe that the snake oil claims were exaggeration, and that it wasn’t worth the money to buy the junk. So why did so many people buy it for so long?

The answer lies for the most part in how it was sold. It’s not without reason that the day the snake oil salesman came to town was exciting to people.

The snake oil salesman’s pitch was more along these lines: “Yes, indeed! This amazing, unbelievable ailment reliever comes from the deepest, darkest forests of Africa. It was first discovered by the Yamaguchi headhunter tribe, who extracted it from the glands of the great anacondas. A great explorer by the name of Dr. John Smith nearly lost his head to the tribe in order to bring this great restorative elixir to the states, for you kind people to buy and enjoy.

“And it certainly didn’t take Dr. Smith long to run scientific tests and discover just what a miraculously amazing concoction this is! This wonderful restorative can totally relieve the common cold . . . yessirree, ladies and gentlemen, it can remove any trace of gout . . . it totally cures consumption . . . it was used to stop a black plague epidemic in a nearby town not so long ago . . . imagine all it could do for you kind, God-fearing folks!”

The snake oil salesman was a master of emotional manipulation. Through telling exciting stories, and using emotionally stimulating language, he was able to capture the people’s fascination . . . and afterward, capture their money.

Now, we’re not telling you to invent some wild fantasy to try to get people to buy your products. That’s certainly immoral, unethical . . . and illegal. Our focus here is on the LANGUAGE of selling - which is the language of EXCITEMENT!

In order to maximize the sales we get, we have to excite our prospects. We need to create marketing copy that excites their desire, and makes them want what we have to offer!

We do this through our use of exciting words in our copy. There’s a huge difference between . . .

Mr. Spock from Star Trek would not have had much success at marketing - we have to grab people through their emotions, their wants, their needs, their desires, their greed. You name it, there’s a card deck for it.

So, what you want to do is find a market that is your target, that other people are interested in reaching, and you want to help them reach that market at an affordable cost.

The bad thing about card decks is their cost. They are sold in packages that reach, generally, 100,000 or 150,000 people or more every time that they’re mailed. But an ad in one of these decks, one card, will cost a minimal of about $1500.

For most small advertisers, that’s a big chunk of money. Even though you couldn’t get a list and mail to that many people on your own for that kind of money, it still is a pretty large chunk of money.

Here’s how you make this work for you and get it for free. You buy a card in the card deck and you divide the card into smaller sized advertisements. Let’s say you put four on one side, and then four on the other. Then you contact other people who are trying to reach the same target markets that you are and who want to go in the same deck that you’re going to go into, and you sell them a small ad on that card.

You don’t charge them the $1500, of course, but you sell those ads for maybe $250 each. With a good headline, and that much space, an ad on a card like that will get a lot of attention.

If you sell those eight ads at the $250, you’ve made $2000. And if the card is only going to cost you $1500, you’ve made a $500 profit before you have started!

But, of course, it’s not what you are looking for. That’s just the gravy ... you’re looking to get your ad for free.

You leave a banner-sized space across the face, the top, of each one of those cards - that is where you are going to put your own ad. You’re going to put your headline, a couple of lines of copy, and your web site address, to build the traffic that you’re looking for.

Everybody wins in this example. Because of your effort, your ad is absolutely free. These people all get an ad on a deck for less than they could afford to go into a card deck on their own, and you don’t have to stop at one card. You can do several of these in several different decks, all reaching your target audience.

Another method is to approach a number of sites on the web who have e-zines and newsletters and instead of selling them a full size ad at $250, maybe you charge them something like $50 to participate, and you put more listings on the card.

Essentially, you just ask them to put a line telling the title of their newsletter, and the address they can go to so someone can subscribe to their newsletter for free. You can put a lot more on the card, but you’re going to make your money in a different way.

This time you’re going to put a headline on that card. A headline that says something like, “The Hottest Free Newsletters on the Web” or “The Most Interesting Newsletters on the Web for Investors” or whatever your topic is. And then you’ll list all these newsletters, and their addresses ... But under your banner you’ll say, “You can come to my site and you can subscribe to any, or all, of these at one location.”

So, instead of having to visit all those little sites of newsletters that interest them, they can come to your site. You construct a page on your site that lists all the newsletters and they can click which ones they would like to subscribe to. Many, if not most of the people who read the card will come to your site, click the newsletters that they want to subscribe to and leave their e-mail address, and then you’ll provide that e-mail address to all those people, who have newsletters.

You’ll charge them a dollar apiece for all those names which you provide them. They win because they get to go in on the card for maybe $50 or $75, and then they pay a dollar apiece for every new subscriber they get. It’s a really inexpensive, sure way for them to get subscribers. You could make many dollars from every name!

Most people who come to your site are going to subscribe to several newsletters. They may subscribe to five, six, seven, or ten newsletters. You’ll get $10 for that name. This way your dollars add up very quickly!

It’s a good way for you to get traffic to your site, for you to build subscribers, and again, you got your advertising absolutely free.

Other great places to go are some of the sites that are press release websites, such as prnewswire, which you will find at www.prnewswire.com. Surprise, surprise! This place has a place where you can register to start receiving their press releases and pick categories that you want to hear about. You can also pluck press releases from lists of today’s news or last week’s news releases.

You can look up categories and find what press releases have been turned into them by category. Another one is prweb, which is the press release database at www.prweb.com. Again, they have lists of press releases that you can find. You can sign up to receive the new ones as they are released. Another company is E-releases, which is found at www.ereleases.com.

Interestingly enough, each of these websites are anxious to get the press releases to you. They want people to send press releases too, because where they make their money is charging these companies to distribute these press releases and get it into as many hands as possible. So, on your end, it’s free to sign up and receive this information. They’re charging the company to distribute these press releases.
